The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is located in the industrial city of Lae, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. The city of Lae has an airport with flights to any location in PNG. The University is the only technological university in the country. It has a main campus and three amalgamated colleges. The main campus has 14 academic departments including a Department of Open and Distance Learning (ODL). It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, natural and applied sciences, built environment, language and business. The university has an Information Technology Services department and a Library.
Applications are sought from suitably qualified persons to fill the following positions within the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University.
Department of Mechanical Engineering
The department offers a four-year undergraduate degree and a graduate masters program in Mechanical Engineering. The department has 16 academic members, 13 technical staff and 3 administrative staff. There are six laboratories in Thermal and Heat Transfer, manufacturing, material science laboratory, thermodynamics that includes refrigeration and air conditioning for students' laboratory work and research, along with a medium size workshop with facilities for machining, milling, a computer numerical control (CNC) machine, EDM, and fabrication including a 3000°C foundry. The department also has an NDT Center for research and consultancy service to industry. There are several researches done in the areas of design and manufacturing, materials characterization, renewable energy and environment, mechatronics, engineering education and refrigeration and air conditioning.
Senior Technical Officer
Applicant for the position must have a Bachelor of Engineering degree in instrumentation/mechanical engineering or equivalent qualification from a recognized university with a strong commitment to teaching and research activities of the department. The key responsibilities will include assistance in the maintenance of all laboratory equipment and instrumentation, conduct preventive maintenance inspections on all instrumentation equipment perform routine maintenance and repair on laboratory instrumentation, troubleshooting and repair of problematic laboratory equipment and undertake calibrations of a range instrumentation utilized in the laboratories.
The position ensures that all laboratory instrumentation are maintained and in proper and safe working conditions. The applicant will work closely with the Laboratory Manager to achieve daily laboratory classes are run without interruption from instrumentation failure.
Suitable candidate should have a minimum 5 years industrial experience and must show interest in learning and being involved in research projects and to be able to progress in the academic support positions. He/she may also be involved in providing NDT inspection services to industry with the laboratory manager.
Base Salary Range: Senior Technical Officer PGK 26,013 - PGK 36,563 per annum
Base DMA Range: PGK1,000 - PGK1,500 per annum
