PNG Fire Service inks deal with Qld

The PNG Fire Service has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to strengthen APEC Summit preparedness in 2018.

The acting Chief Fire Officer for the PNG Fire Services, Bill Roo, in a recent trip to Sydney to attend the Australasia Fire Authorities Conference, on the 4th to the 7th, signed the MoU with the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services acting Commissioner, Michael Wassing.

The deal was inked by both parties on 5th September 2017.

Roo said this was done in preparation to deliver a safe APEC 2018.

“Under the MoU, PNG Fire Services will be assisted with certain capabilities in terms of training and logistics to prepare for the APEC. The assistance will continue during the APEC period and beyond.”

Roo said PNG Fire Service has continued to establish a good relationship with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and has sought assistance in training and logistics from them as and when required.

The signing of the MoU will consolidate all these support and formalise the relationship.

He said the PNG Fire Service is now assessing areas of training where up skilling is required for firefighters to attend by trainers from the QFES in PNG and abroad.

At the same conference, Roo was elected as the deputy president of the Pacific Islands Fire and Emergency Services Association.

The association comprises of 14 Pacific Island nations, including Papua New Guinea.
