According to RPNGC Lae Metropolitan Command Facebook page, a majority of the escapees from the overcrowded prison in Morobe Province were remandees awaiting their cases to be prosecuted in the courts.
Remandees awaiting trial at the Committal and National Court, totalled 30 prisoners, and were charged under varies offences from wilful murder, drug processing, armed robbery and sexual penetration.
And from the 12 convicted prisoners still on the run, three are convicted murderers.
Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr on Sunday confirmed that from 77 prisoners escaped on last week.
He said 17 of the male prisoners were killed and three were recaptured during the prison escape.
