19 recaptured, 22 still at large: PPC

According to East New Britain provincial police commander, Joseph Tabali, police have started a combined operation with the Correctional Service to recapture the remaining 22 escapees.

PPC Tabali said so far, the communities of ENB have been cooperative and forthcoming with information.

“I am working with the aim to get all 41 escapees back into the prison camp in Kerevat and police is working around the clock to get this done,” he said.

​Improved infrastructure for remote school

The Papua New Guinea-Australia partnership will fund the Palmalmal Secondary School in Pomio District, which is one of Papua New Guinea’s least developed areas.

The upgrade of the school will be funded through a K3.5 million Incentive Fund grant and a K1 million counterpart contribution from the Pomio District Development Authority (DDA). 

Provinces praised for pioneering conservation project

The project, community-based forest and coastal conservation and resource management in PNG, supports the conservation initiative of communities in more than 200,000 hectares in the provinces.

It aims to help in advancing the provincial government’s efforts to protect the remaining rainforests in the Baining Mountain, Nakanai and Whiteman Ranges.

K1.5m agreement for biodiversity conservation

The funding will go towards a community-based forest and coastal conservation and resource management in PNG project.

The project is implemented by the Conservation Environment and Protection Authority (CEPA) of PNG, with two years of funding provided by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed today by CEPA and ENB Provincial Government, and separately with the WNB Provincial Government, which enables the project to go ahead.

​ENB polls: Two arrested for impersonation

The first arrest was made on Monday when a man from Kaintiba, Morobe, tried to vote under a deceased’s name.

Polling team 20 at Tokiala Plantation, Gazelle Open Electorate, were on the ground when police were called in to arrest Lawrence Nondaseth, says provincial police boss Joseph Tabali.

Nondaseth was arrested and charged for impersonation by the Criminal Investigation Department.

The second incident occurred at Vunamami LLG, Kokopo district, under the watch of team 46.

Lone woman contests ENB provincial seat

Independent candidate Lanieth AUA will be challenging sitting Member for Gazelle and Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Leo Dion, along with 17 other candidates.

Kokopo Open MP Ereman ToBaining Jnr currently occupies the Governor seat.

​Kokopo police intercept flight, detain soldiers

Provincial Police Commander, Joseph Tabali, confirms that this came about after they received information alleging that some soldiers were on the flight upon a candidate’s request.

It was claimed that the flight was sponsored by National Alliance endorsed candidate for Namatanai, Walter Schnaubelt.

All 23 of them disembarked from the plane and were taken to the Kokopo Police Station where they were searched and questioned.

Police found out that three were soldiers of the PNG Defence Force.

​PNGDF soldiers detained in Kokopo

This was confirmed by the joint operations commander Colonel Esekia Wenzel, who says the men were detained but then released without being charged.

Colonel Wenzel could not verify the circumstances surrounding the detainment but says his office has confirmed that the men were detained following a tip off to police.

These three men, attached with the Air Transport Wing, are currently on leave from duties.

One of them was en route to Kavieng for an emergency leave but was detained along with the rest of the men, who were all in the same group travelling into Kokopo.

​Kokopo hosts PNG Chocolate Festival

The cocoa sample tasting is the highlight of the two-day ‘Cocoa Warwagira’, to be staged in Kokopo, East New Britain, from May 25-27, 2017.

The purpose of the show is to find the best Papua New Guinea cocoa to represent the industry in the International Cocoa of Excellence show in Paris, France. It will identify and reward cocoa farmers in various categories such as best cocoa quality, best fermentary facility and best managed block.
