2018 SP Sports Awards launched

There to witness the occasion were representatives from different sporting bodies plus sponsors of the Sports Awards.

President of the PNG Olympic Committee, Sir John Dawanincura, said 2017 featured great sporting moments for PNG which should see nominations flooding in.

“These achievements deserve to be recognised and the people involved congratulated for their efforts.”

He thanked SP Brewery for continuing to recognise sports through the Sports Awards since 1992.

SP sports awards to be launched

This year will mark 26 years for the SP Sports Awards and nominations for the 2018 SP Sports Awards.

SP Sports Awards is an event that recognises sporting excellence from Papua New Guinea’s sports men and women.

The nominations will officially be opened in order after the launch and will be witnessed by various heads of sporting organisations at the Brew Kettle, SP Brewery Head Office in Port Moresby.

More details will be released in the days leading up to the launch of the SP Sports awards.

Two main Olympic events this year

They are the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4th – 15th and the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from October 1st – 6th.

PNGOC Secretary General, Auvita Rapilla, highlighted during a brief that all of PNGOC’s fundraising events, especially the Trukai Fun Run and the Prime Minister’s Corporate Golf Challenge, will be targeted towards these Games.

Rapilla also acknowledged the role and support of the sporting media with the further assistance of the establishment of the PNG Sports Journalist Association.

PNGOC launches events calendar

Secretary General for the PNG Olyimpic Committee, Auvita Rapilla said it will again be a full year of major events coming up with six permanent games that are already on par with their own preparations.

“We’re an organization that is event orientated. As we’ve progressed over the year, we have six permanent games on our calendar.”

Rapilla said not only is the committee preparing for the games already ahead, but the committee also has a number of games that they are also preparing for.

PNG Olympic Committee year in review

Amongst the new beginnings included Team PNG’s participation at the 5th version of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, among others.

The annual events reached new heights as the organisation looked to build on the foundation that was set in 2016 with its new strategy and direction.

Celebrating 25 years of the SP Sports Awards reflecting the partnership between SP Brewery, PNGOC and PNG Sports Foundation, the 2017 SP Sports Awards saw more than 60 nominations received from around the country.

Olympic association recognises Dawanincura

The award was presented to Sir John on November 2, 2017, during ANOC’s 22ND Annual General Assembly in Austria.

The ANOC Award, which recognises outstanding service to sport and the Olympic Movement, was presented by President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Back, and ANOC president, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.

Sir John has been involved with the sports movement in PNG for 45 years. 30 of those has been with the PNG Olympic Committee when it used to be known as the PNG Sports Federation & National Olympic Committee.

Raminai visits PNG Olympic Committee

The Vice Minister was met by PNG Olympic Committee President, Sir John Dawanincura and Secretary General, Auvita Rapilla.

He was taken on a tour of the office meeting senior management and staff of the organization.

Sir John welcomed the Vice Minister and thanked him for taking time to visit the home of Team PNG, also extending his thanks to the Prime Minister and Sports Minister, Peter O’Neill.

​MRDC walks off with golf title

MRDC took out the title in Port Moresby, walking away with the trophy and return tickets to Sydney courtesy of Air Niugini.

The event drew 30 teams from various corporate organisations and government institutions.

Air Niugini also provided prizes for the second and third places, which went to Southern Cross Assurance Group and Tupira Surf Club respectively. The second prize was for return tickets to Brisbane and the third were return tickets to Cairns.

Toyota bus up for grabs

Ela Motors presented the Toyota Hi-Ace bus to the PNG Olympic Committee this week in Port Moresby.

There will be two mini buses on offer, one for the Port Moresby event on September 22 and the other for Lae on October 6.

“Ela Motors is very proud to be involved in the Prime Minister’s Golf event to raise funds for Team PNG, Toyota globally is also involved with the Olympics and we’re proud to support the Olympic Movement,” said National Sales Manager for Ela Motors, Chris Von Oppeln.

Capital Insurance latest sponsor for PNGOC

The partnership, which was made official yesterday, will see Capital Insurance cover PNGOC’s and Team PNG’s insurance needs up to 2020.

The sponsorship is from 2017 to 2020, with the possibility of extending it further. This means all PNG Olympic Committee insurance requirements, as well as international Games attended by Team PNG athletes and officials, are covered during this period.

President of the PNGOC, Sir John Dawanincura, welcomed Capital Insurance and described it as another important partnership for the PNGOC.
